Founder Tony Winder opened the original salon on Newchurch Road, conceiving the idea while working as a hairdresser on P&O cruise ships.
In 1972 the salon outgrew its premises and moved to Bank Street, Rawtenstall. The space was ideal to accommodate both a barbershop and hairdressers until the late 70s when unisex became vogue.
Competing as part of the World Cup Hairdressing team (yes there really was one!) training a multitude of hairdressers, collecting barbershop memorabilia and becoming friends with many of the clients, kept Tony busy until he retired from hairdressing in 2010.
Away from the chair, Tony put his energy into the creation of Bosun’s Barbers – a space dedicated to barbering and a place to display one of the largest collections of barbershop memorabilia. He also opened a dedicated space for children’s hairdressing, Noah’s Ark.
In 2024 Tony has fully retired, the business now being owned by longstanding highly experienced Senior Stylists Katrina & Charlotte, who are joined by Brett as Finance Director. Supported by a team of creative and passionate individuals, the salon continues to evolve, developing and motivating today’s young talent, in a family-friendly salon environment.
A creative and motivated team is as important to us as technical hairdressing skills. Our success relies on talented and dedicated employees, ongoing training and great customer service.
As one of the longest-standing hair salons in the Rossendale Valley, we’ve trained over 300 hairdressers and barbers, many of who have gone on to become salon managers or high-profile and talented business owners.
Our team of stylists are state registered with the Hair & Barber Council
Trainees work in the salon assisting stylists & barbers with dedicated training sessions to develop their skills. Day-to-day duties include front-of-house, booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying & styling hair, mixing & applying colour.
We partner with a professional training academy, which provides weekly training days, supported by an in-house training programme to help individuals excel.
To be successful, we look for good communication skills, demonstrable interest in barbering or hairdressing, a smart appearance, punctuality and friendly nature.
